Do you know the feeling when the fear of falling slows you down? When you feel cramps on difficult passages or when lead climbing becomes an unstable experience? You're not alone! Many climbers, even experienced ones, struggle with the fear of falling. If you recognise yourself in this situation, then this workshop is ideal for you! In a supportive atmosphere, you'll learn to better manage your fears and enjoy climbing more, whether you're a beginner or an advanced climber.
About the course
Fear of falling is a widespread phenomenon among climbers that can significantly hamper enjoyment and progress on the rock or in the gym. Even experienced athletes are familiar with the sensation of cramping on difficult passages and feeling lead climbing as a challenge. As Alex Honnold says: ‘People sometimes assume that because I climb free solo, I'm not afraid or that I'm just different. But the truth is probably the opposite: I've been scared so often that I've learnt to understand my fears better.’
You too can learn to better understand and control your fears. In this two-day workshop, we'll delve into the world of the fear of falling together and develop strategies for dealing with it better. To begin with, we'll examine the general causes of the fear of falling. We'll clarify the factors that trigger this fear in many climbers and establish the theoretical basis for turning this knowledge into practical exercises and mental techniques.
We will then turn our attention to belaying and falling techniques, deepening your technique, especially dynamic fall belaying. The aim is to strengthen your confidence in your own abilities and those of your partner and, at the same time, to develop mental strategies to help you control your fear and calm yourself on the wall.
It is very important that you feel comfortable and safe during the workshop. Therefore, each exercise has been designed to meet your individual needs and create a positive, anxiety-free learning environment.
Through a variety of practical exercises at different levels of difficulty, you will be given concrete tools that you can use independently after the workshop. We'll give you a long-term perspective by introducing methods and exercises that will help you to continually work on your fear and climb more confidently in the long term.
The workshop also gives you the opportunity to exchange ideas and socialise. You'll meet other climbing enthusiasts with similar experiences and be able to exchange ideas in a supportive atmosphere.
Important notes:
- Fear is a natural part of climbing and doesn't just disappear. We'll teach you to recognise it, accept it and use it as a useful signal.
- You'll receive a toolbox of strategies that will help you develop a positive way of dealing with fear in the long term.
- The aim is to provide you with practical methods and exercises that you can also integrate into your training after the workshop in order to continually work on your anxiety.

- You will need your own complete climbing equipment (climbing shoes, harness, safety device, rope, magnesium).
- The rope and/or safety device can be rented on request for EUR 5 each.
